CD-QuickShare Late Breaking News Note: Print this file so you have it for future reference. Contents - WINDOWS(R) 95 - CD-ROM COMPATIBILITY - NETWORKING - THE UNINSTALL PROGRAM - OTHER NEWS WINDOWS 95 ------------- * Multiple operating systems If you have two operating systems (for example, Windows 3.1 and Windows 95) installed on your computer, during CD-QuickShare installation the drivers in the CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files are updated for the operating system that is currently running. To run CD-QuickShare under both operating systems, open the CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT file for the operating system that is not running, and make the changes described on pages 10 and 11 of the CD-QuickShare Administrator's Guide. * Windows 95 Can't Find CD-QuickShare Drive When you install CD-QuickShare on a Windows 95 system, some configurations may not be able to locate the CD-QuickShare drive. If your system has this problem, you will see this message the first time you start CD-QuickShare: The MSCDEX.EXE program or the CD-QuickShare driver CDSHARE.EXE have not been loaded or installed correctly. Do you want to open CD-QuickShare anyway? Windows 95 is trying to assign the same drive letter to your actual CD-ROM drive and to the CD-QuickShare drive. You can fix it easily with a one letter change in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. To change the drive assignment: 1. Choose Run from the Start menu and type SYSEDIT. Press Enter. 2. The front file is AUTOEXEC.BAT. Notice the second line added by CD-QuickShare. The switch /L:n indicates the drive letter CD-QuickShare is trying to use. 3. Change that letter to be the first unused local drive letter on your system. If your actual CD-ROM drive is E, for example, change this switch to be /L:F 4. Restart your system. * CD-QuickShare and Windows 95 AUTORUN function CD-QuickShare does not support AUTORUN under Windows 95. AUTORUN allows CD-ROM publishers to place AUTORUN.INF on a CD-ROM and automatically launch a specified program on the disc when it is inserted in the CD-ROM drive. CD-QuickShare will not automatically launch programs on discs that include AUTORUN.INF. * Mitsumi CD-ROM drivers in Windows 95 CD-QuickShare is not compatible with the following Mitsumi CD-ROM driver under Windows 95: MTMMINIP.MPD (version 1.46) You may have problems creating image files, or your computer may stop working. We recommend that you upgrade to a newer version of the Mitsumi driver. CD-ROM COMPATIBILITY -------------------- * CD-ROM XA and Kodak Photo CD-ROM formats CD-QuickShare may have problems recognizing CD-ROMs created with the CD-ROM XA and Kodak Photo formats. For example, you may not be able to create image files. If you successfully create image files, you may not be able to access them. If you can create, access, and even run specific applications, CD-QuickShare may stop working. NETWORKING ---------- * CD-QuickShare installation on a network drive DO NOT install CD-QuickShare on a network drive. The program CDSHARE.EXE allows CD-QuickShare to work properly. When you install and run CD-QuickShare on a network drive, CDSHARE.EXE will not load. An error message will tell you that CD-QuickShare is not available. * CD-QuickShare shared database on Novell file server and WFW 3.11 You can install CD-QuickShare on a computer running Windows for Workgroups 3.11 and connect the computer to a Novell file server. If you place the CD-QuickShare database on the file server then change the drive letter where the database is located, you will not be able to access the database. To access the database, open your CDSHARE.INI file and change the following option to point to the new drive letter: [Database] dispdbpath= * MSCDEX line in AUTOEXEC.BAT conflicts with LANtastic Redirector If the MSCDEX line in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file appears before the LANtastic network drivers, an error message will inform you that you must use the LANtastic network Redirector. To fix this problem, open your AUTOEXEC.BAT file and place the MSCDEX.EXE line after the LANtastic network drivers. * Database path on LANtastic networks When you store the database on a LANstatic network, CD-QuickShare enters the actual drive letter to the database path in your CDSHARE.INI file. If you send CD-QuickShare to your users and they don't have the correct drive mapping, they will not be able to access the database. Before you run QuickSetup, open your CDSHARE.INI file, and enter the UNC path to the database in the dbpath= field. Then, run QuickSetup and send CD-QuickShare to your users. For more information on UNC paths, see your CD-QuickShare Administrator's Guide. THE UNINSTALL PROGRAM --------------------- * The Uninstall program stops because a CD-ROM is in the drive If you have a disc inserted in the CD-QuickShare drive while removing CD-QuickShare from your computer, the Uninstall program will prompt you to eject the disc before you continue. Run CD-QuickShare and eject the disc. If you can't eject the disc because the database is unavailable, open the CDSHARE.INI file and remove the following entries: [Driver] Map0= [User] CDROM= Inserted= * /D:CDSHARE$ switch not removed by the Uninstall program If the /D:CDSHARE$ switch on the MSCDEX line in AUTOEXEC.BAT is added someplace other than the end of the line, the Uninstall program will not remove it. To remove this switch, open your AUTOEXEC.BAT file and remove the entry. * Network error when removing CD-QuickShare from WFW 3.11 If you get a network error while trying to remove CD-QuickShare from a shared drive under Windows For Workgroups 3.11, ignore the error. The Uninstall program will complete successfully. OTHER NEWS ---------- * CD-QuickShare and memory managers If you use a memory manager (such as QEMM.EXE) to optimize your computer's memory, and have computer problems after you install CD-QuickShare (for example, network errors, drivers not working, or you can't run Windows), we recommend you prevent CD-QuickShare from using high (or upper) memory by adding /NOHMA or /NOUMB to the CD-QuickShare line in your CONFIG.SYS file. The entry below shows how to disable both upper and high memory: DEVICE=C:\CDSHARE\CDSHARE.EXE /NOHMA /NOUMB
